Tired of Tossing and Turning? Discover CBT-I and Meet Our New Therapist, Anna!

At Well Workshop Psychological Services in Edmonton, we understand that a good night’s rest is the foundation of your mental and physical health. Yet, for many in our community, especially those navigating ADHD, chronic pain, or anxiety, sleep often feels like a battleground. If you are tired of "trying" to sleep and failing, it is time to try something that actually works.

We are proud to offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), and we are even more excited to announce that our newest team member, Anna, is now accepting clients for specialized sleep support!

What is CBT-I? (And Why It’s the "Gold Standard")

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is not just another list of "sleep hygiene" tips like avoiding caffeine. It is the internationally recognized first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. Unlike sleeping pills, which can lead to dependency and daytime grogginess, CBT-I addresses the psychological and behavioural roots of sleep issues.

CBT-I is a multicomponent approach that helps you "re-wire" your brain for rest. Key elements include:

  • Stimulus Control: Rebuilding the mental association between your bed and sleep (rather than your bed and "scrolling" or "worrying").

  • Sleep Restriction Therapy: Consolidating your sleep to make it deeper and more efficient.

  • Cognitive Restructuring: Identifying and challenging the "racing thoughts" and dysfunctional beliefs that keep you awake.

  • Relaxation Training: Using somatic techniques to lower the "hyperarousal" that makes you feel "wired but tired".

The Link Between Sleep, ADHD, and Chronic Pain

At our Edmonton ADHD clinic, we see how deeply sleep and neurodivergence are intertwined. Statistics show that up to 63.9% of adults with ADHD experience insomnia symptoms. For neurodivergent individuals, "hyperarousal", a state of constant mental or physical alertness, can make it nearly impossible to fall asleep.

Furthermore, if you are living with chronic pain, your sleep is likely fragmented, which in turn makes your pain feel worse the next day. CBT-I is highly effective in managing these complex, co-occurring conditions.
